Paper Abstract:      Some ideas on the importance of technology in the specific context of the financial services have been propounded and deeply discussed. According to some authors, technology can be responsible for the promotion of important reforms in the banking structure. Due to the great impact that Information and Communication Technologies have been having on the modernization of the Portuguese banking system, we can assume that competitive advantage will largely depend on technological innovation. However, behind the obvious advantages brought by the new technologies to the banking sector, there have also been some paradigmatic examples of incapacity to optimize the qualitative aspects. On this basis, the major point of the present study is to highlight and reflect upon some potential technological and strategic hindrances to the performance of the Portuguese Banking System.
